Above are sample images of prints of physical representations of economic indicators. One day in spring of 2017 after macroeconomics class with Dr. Bots, I researched 3D printing a map of varying height – I found color-coordinated images that were representative of 2 categories: unemployment and GDP per capita. Then, I converted the images to gray scale and used a Java file that generated an STL (3D printable) file coordinating the color to a height. Then, I 3D printed these models using a MakerBot Replicator at William Jewell College. The results are featured above! The first map is based on unemployment, and the second map is based on GDP per capita.
